He had also been employed as a miner at several sites across Canada and NWT. He was a renowned composer, fiddler, instructor and songwriter who had accomplished numerous recordings. He had also published a book of his tunes which includes a narrative of origins. He was profoundly involved in all Celtic events across Cape Breton Island, United States and Europe. He was a former member of the Inverness Volunteer Fire Department,
vice-president of the Inverness Home and School Association. He was involved in the advertising of the Broad Cove Scottish Concert and played a major role in the dedication for his close friend, Jerry Holland. He was quite involved in charitable fundraising events. Visitation will be held in Inverness Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 30, from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be held in St. Margaret's Church, Broad Cove at 11 a.m. on Thursday, December 31 with Rev. Duncan MacIsaac officiating. Interment wil follow in the Parish Cemetery. Family flowers only. Donations can be made to any East Coast Credit Union for his son, Liam's educational fund. On-line condolences can be sent to: www.mem.com".
We have pleasant memories of Dougie playing the fiddle here for parties because we had a piano. Once special evening that stands out in my mind was Dougie, Brian Doyle and his wife, Liz Dorothy from Ireland, Patrick Lamey and Heather Richards.Dougie was in his prime. The music was unbelieveable as each took their turn playing and then they would play as a group. When the music was over, Yvette treated them to her Acadian Meat Pies.
What a night.
