Burke Family reunites for holiday show

GLACE BAY — Music has been a fun and rewarding excuse for many Burke family reunions in recent years.
 
“There’s 10 of us. Six girls and four guys, all brothers and sisters,” said Bob Burke. 
 
“(Music) brings us together as a family. There’s five of us that are still (in the) local area but there’s two up in Halifax and two up in Amherst and then one in Windsor, Ont., so it’s hard to get together as a group, but this really gives us a reason to spend a lot more time together and it’s really brought the family closer over the years. It really has.”
 
With three CDs to their name, New Waterford’s Burke Family has enjoyed tremendous success over the years, including an East Coast Music Award for their holiday album, A Burke Family Christmas, released in 2003, which was a followup to their debut album, Returning Home, released in 2001.
 
“We had so much positive feedback from the Christmas one, and people were looking for more, and so we just released this last one called The Reason We Sing, and to date it’s going very, very well,” said Burke. “Our brother, Pius, is a very nice songwriter. He’s done some exceptional work. He’s written songs on all the CDs we’ve done and the latest one ... he has three original songs on that as well and we’re pretty pleased about that.”
 
The popular family band — featuring Bob, Pius, Stan, Kevin, Brenda, Sharon, Anne Marie,  June, Karen and Diane — will perform a combination of tunes including many of their Christmas favourites in a special performance, Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Savoy Theatre in Glace Bay.
