Howdy Everyone,
After long discussion we decided on
The Boston Kiltics. You'd be surprised how hard it is
for four people to agree on a name. I think most band
names are a compromise after long hours of argument
and a couple bottles of wine, thanks Andy in Coram,
NY. E-mail me off line @ ceolach at yahoo.com and I'll
arrange to send you your prize ;-).
So who are The Boston Kiltics?
We are four Bostonians with long ties to NS folk
music.
Our fiddler, Doug Lamey, is well known to Boston
audiences. Doug's late grandfather Bill recorded for
Shanachie and Rounder. Doug has also studied with some
of the best Irish fiddlers in Boston including Tommy
Peoples but has a particular fondness for the good old
Cape Breton tunes.
Dance is a huge draw these days and we are lucky to
have two amazing stepdancers. Pamela Campbell is the
daughter of John and Bea Campbell. John has been one
of the brightest lights on the Boston Cape Breton
music scene for the past 4+ decades and his recordings
on Rounder Records are well known.
Christine Morrison has been dancing for most of her
life and along with Pam Campbell make up one half of
Four on the Floor. Christine's mother Peggy has been
active at Watertowns Canadian American Club for
decades and is the present Gaelic Club president. Pam
and Christine have shared the stage with Natalie
MacMaster, Ashley MacIsaac, Beolach and others.
I grew up in Boston of Irish/Nova Scotia parentage. My
mom is one of the same #11 MacDonalds in Antigonish as
Kendra, Troy and Sabre MacGillivray, though I didn't
inherit nearly as much talent ;-). I've studied guitar
with Dave MacIsaac and the late Scottish guitarist
Tony Cuffe and Gaelic song at St. F.X., Gaelic College
and a few kitchens in Cape Breton. I also started
playing Irish tin whistle 10+ years ago for a bit of
balance.
The four of us are a distinctly Cape Breton group with
a touch of Boston attitude and we plan on having a
fair number of gigs lined up for next summer so
hopefully we'll get to meet some of you.
If anyone has a favorite local festival they'd like to
see us play feel free to shoot me more info. We have a
promotional DVD and www.bostonkiltics.com should be up
and running in the next couple months.
Thanks again everybody, Cliff
